Poor in Pocket, Rich in Spirit
I am lucky. Very lucky. I live in Australia. I have food ... a roof ... a future. And I get to pay for all this, would you believe, by making people laugh! How lucky am I?
Because I’m lucky, I don’t get to live in a rubbish tip. And I don’t get to be poor.
A lot of folk in the Philippines do get to be poor. And many do get to sleep near the smell of rotting garbage.
However, despite their depressing circumstances, more and more of these resilient people are rising up out of poverty, by forging their own small businesses – almost out of thin air. Though poor in pocket, they are rich in spirit.
I only read about these incredible people a few hours ago, but their story inspired me to write my first ever post on my first ever blog. So here it is - a tribute to the entrepreneurial poor of the Philippines.
With a little support, their entrepreneurial spirit can generate hope for a whole family, and build a better future for an entire community. But the key is - ‘with a little support’. With microfinance, training and programs, these poor but passionate people can seize opportunities and break the poverty cycle.

It’s unlikely I’ll ever get to ‘make people laugh’ in the most desperate corners of the Philippines. But, with a little effort, you and I can get to do something else - put a smile on a few faces. Because we are also rich in spirit.
